Some of my rehabber friends have said that West Nile has been bad this year. They way they describe the deaths sounds very much like what you observed. If that is the case then you are lucky to have 3 other owls that are not affected. Anyway, Goodspeed and keep us updated on any other changes.yojimbothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05184877040031801326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4520514702094485674.post-91023743680075960612015-09-09T07:55:24.933-05:002015-09-09T07:55:24.933-05:00Thank you for writing and sharing this, it is very...Thank you for writing and sharing this, it is very touching. However, as you say, I hope that a new courtship will be help you get over this. I'm sure it's difficult to mourn a creature you have spent so much time following and writing about. But know that (as I've read in your posts) Sarah had as full, rich, and productive a life as any Great Horned Owl could have. It's sad that she's gone, but your pictures and her offspring are proof that she was a magnificent specimen, and a successful caring parent. Your regular posts have ensured that she will be missed by many....even those who never saw her in person.

Your post came on the same day that I was just thinking about GHOs. The recent heat (and my work schedule) has had me dog-walking at odd hours over the last few weeks. I have heard very few owls over the summer here in Webster Park, and seen none. Just this morning about 6:30 while walking my dog I heard a very clear series of hoots.

I was able to locate the owl and it was right at the top of a pine tree, crouched down and facing away, with it's tail in the air. It hooted about every 45 seconds. I once saw a pair of GHOs in this same posture, facing each other across an alley as if in a territorial dispute. I gave one hoot back, and it quickly swiveled it's head to look at me, but then realized I wasn't worth it's time and looked back in the direction it had been facing. This was towards a more wooded area in people's back yards, so I couldn't tell if there was another owl back there or something else it was fixated on. My cell phone was all I had, so I snapped a couple of pictures, but really needed a better camera.

To my dog's confusion, I backtracked the two blocks to my house, grabbed my DSLR, and headed back to the tree. Alas the owl had moved on, and I heard no more hooting during my walk.

I got home thinking it would be a good day, since I'd seen a Great Horned Owl for the first time in several weeks. Indeed it was, until I read your post.

Thanks for your continued dedication to the Forest Park Owls. Hopefully another pair will fill the void in the Forest Park ecosystem and allow you to continue your prowls and posts.

BSRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15466735916045536836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4520514702094485674.post-14134768135949712252015-09-07T20:22:13.844-05:002015-09-07T20:22:13.844-05:00Mark, I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news....Mark, I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news. Her stature both physically and spiritually were worthy of your time and effort and has blessed us all with more owl knowledge than I ever imagined I would have.
I hope Charles attracts a mate very soon and that you and your supporters get the good fortune to witness an initial courtship.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05215400644456186606noreply@blogger.com
